A hand-carved wooden book binding press with a planar rectangular base, tall side panels, a top bar held in place with a pair of mortises and small iron nails, and a threaded wooden rod which presses on a beveled wooden plank beneath. Included with the binding press is a copy of Henry J. Raymond's 1865 book entitled, "The Life and Public Service of Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States; Together with His State Papers, Including His Speeches, Addresses, Messages, Letters, and Proclamations, and The Closing Scenes Connected with His Life and Death." Binding presses like this example were used to compress the pages within the covers during the drying process and facilitate the binding process once fully dried.
