Classic mid-twentieth century Navajo concho (concha) belt set with lovely natural turquoise; nicely proportioned with a rich patina of age. Repoussé (bumped out) designs add rich texture to the design. It is not a heavy belt and is very comfortable to wear. One stone in the buckle has a hairline crack as does each of the two stones in the two conchos at the opposite end of the belt. To our eye, none of these detracts from the overall beauty, appearance or quality of this belt. The belt is from the collection of the Alpha Wirin estate. She was an artist and the third wife of A. L. Wirin, a prominent civil rights attorney in Los Angeles during World War II. He worked for the Southern California branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and was pivotal in many landmark civil rights cases involving Japanese Americans, arguing the Korematsu and Yasui cases before the Supreme Court.
