U.S.%20%234323-32%0A2012%2045%26cent%3B%26nbsp%3BFlags%20of%20Our%20Nation%26nbsp%3B%0ASet%20VI%20(10%20Stamps)%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIssue%20Date%3A%20August%2016%2C%202012%0ACity%3A%20Sacramento%2C%20CA%0AQuantity%3A%20250%2C000%2C000%0APrinted%20By%3A%20American%20Packaging%20Corp%20for%20Sennett%20Security%20Products%0APrinting%20Method%3A%20Photogravure%0AColor%3A%20Multicolored%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AFlags%20of%20Our%20Nation%2C%20Set%20VI%3A%26nbsp%3B%202012%20marks%20the%20sixth%20and%20final%20set%20of%20stamps%20in%20the%20series.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20and%20territory%20flags%20reflect%20the%20history%20of%20each%20region%20they%20represent.%26nbsp%3B%20State%20seals%20are%20a%20common%20subject%20of%20many%26nbsp%3B%20flags.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20few%20designs%20are%20based%20on%20regimental%20banners%20used%20in%20the%20Civil%20War.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20uniqueness%20of%20each%20state%20flag%20in%20the%20series%20reflects%20the%20diversity%20of%20the%20United%20States%20and%20its%20territories.%20%26nbsp%3B%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20Lone%20Star%20Flag%20was%20the%20national%20flag%20of%20the%20Republic%20of%20Texas%2C%20before%20the%20second-largest%20state%20joined%20the%20Union.%26nbsp%3B%20When%20Texas%20became%20the%2028th%20state%20in%201845%2C%20it%20adopted%20the%20same%20banner%20as%20its%20state%20flag.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20blue%20stands%20for%20loyalty%2C%20the%20white%20represents%20purity%2C%20and%20the%20red%20is%20for%20bravery.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%201912%2C%20the%20Sons%20and%20Daughters%20of%20Utah%20Pioneers%20prepared%20a%20flag%20to%20be%20presented%20to%20the%20battleship%20Utah.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20featured%20the%20state%20seal%20encircled%20by%20a%20thin%20gold%20ring%20on%20a%20blue%20field.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20differed%20from%20the%20flag%20adopted%20in%201896%2C%20which%20pictured%20the%20state%20seal%20as%20all%20white%20without%20a%20gold%20circle%20around%20it.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20battleship%26rsquo%3Bs%20flag%20became%20the%20official%20Utah%20state%20flag%20in%201913.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AVermont%20has%20had%20three%20flags%20since%20it%20became%20the%20fourteenth%20state%20in%201791.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20first%20two%20flags%20were%20similar%20to%20the%20national%20flag%2C%20and%20residents%20wanted%20something%20unique.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20was%20discovered%20that%20a%20flag%20design%20was%20authorized%20in%201838%2C%20but%20was%20not%20often%20used.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20was%20the%20flag%20the%20Vermont%20regiments%20had%20carried%20during%20the%20Civil%20War%2C%20the%20Spanish-American%20War%2C%20and%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20World%20War%20I.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20consisted%20of%20the%20Vermont%20State%20Coat%20of%20Arms%20on%20a%20blue%20field.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201919%2C%20the%20historic%20design%20became%20the%20official%20flag%20of%20Vermont.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20United%20States%20Virgin%20Islands%20is%20a%20territory%20of%20the%20United%20States%20located%20in%20the%20Caribbean%20Sea.%26nbsp%3B%20Its%20flag%26rsquo%3Bs%20background%20is%20white%2C%20which%20symbolizes%20purity.%20It%20pictures%20a%20familiar%20American%20symbol%2C%20the%20American%20Eagle%20with%20the%20U.S.%20shield%20on%20its%20breast.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20sprig%20of%20laurel%20is%20held%20in%20one%20talon%20and%20three%20arrows%20in%20the%20other.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20arrows%20represent%20the%20islands%20of%20St.%20Croix%2C%20St.%20Thomas%2C%20and%20St.%20John%2C%20the%20main%20islands%20in%20the%20territory.%26nbsp%3B%20On%20either%20side%20of%20the%20eagle%20are%20the%20letters%20V%20and%20I%2C%20which%20stand%20for%20Virgin%20Islands.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AWashington%26rsquo%3Bs%20state%20flag%20is%20the%20only%20one%20with%20a%20green%20field%20and%20the%20only%20state%20flag%20picturing%20an%20actual%20person.%26nbsp%3B%20Though%20this%20Northwestern%20state%20joined%20the%20Union%20in%201889%2C%20it%20did%20not%20adopt%20a%20flag%20until%201923.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20seal%20is%20in%20the%20center%20of%20the%20flag%20and%20pictures%20George%20Washington.%26nbsp%3B%20Washington%20is%20the%20only%20state%20to%20be%20named%20after%20a%20President.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20citizens%20of%20western%20Virginia%20did%20not%20want%20to%20secede%20from%20the%20Union%20in%201861%2C%20so%20they%20left%20the%20Virginia%20Convention%20and%20formed%20their%20own%20state.%26nbsp%3B%20On%20April%2020%2C%201863%2C%20West%20Virginia%20became%20a%20free%20state%20of%20the%20United%20States.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20original%20state%20flag%20had%20different%20images%20on%20the%20front%20and%20back.%26nbsp%3B%20When%20it%20became%20too%20costly%20to%20produce%20the%20flag%2C%20the%20two%20designs%20were%20combined%20to%20create%20the%20present%20flag.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20coat%20of%20arms%20rests%20above%20branches%20of%20big%20laurel%2C%20the%20state%26rsquo%3Bs%20flower.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20red%20ribbon%20above%20the%20seal%20reads%20%26ldquo%3BState%20of%20West%20Virginia.%26rdquo%3B%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20Civil%20War%20regiments%20from%20Wisconsin%20were%20anxious%20to%20have%20an%20official%20banner%20to%20display%20during%20battle.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201863%2C%20the%20legislature%20voted%20on%20a%20resolution%20adopting%20a%20design%20that%20was%20already%20in%20use%20by%20some%20of%20the%20troops.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20dark%20blue%20flag%20with%20the%20state%26rsquo%3Bs%20seal%20in%20the%20center%20was%20officially%20adopted%20in%201913.%26nbsp%3B%20To%20distinguish%20it%20from%20other%20state%20flags%20with%20seals%2C%20the%20word%20%26ldquo%3BWISCONSIN%26rdquo%3B%20and%20the%20year%20of%20statehood%20%26ldquo%3B1848%26rdquo%3B%20were%20added%20in%201979.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AWyoming%20did%20not%20have%20an%20official%20state%20flag%20in%201916%2C%20so%20the%20state%20regent%20for%20the%20Daughters%20of%20the%20American%20Revolution%20suggested%20a%20contest%20be%20held.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20%2420%20prize%20was%20awarded%20at%20the%20state%20DAR%20convention%20to%20the%20winning%20flag%20design%20made%20by%20Verna%20Keays%2C%20a%20recent%20graduate%20from%20the%20Art%20Institute%20of%20Chicago.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20design%20was%20adopted%20as%20the%20Wyoming%20state%20flag%20on%20January%2013%2C%201917.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20Stars%20and%20Stripes%20is%20a%20proud%20symbol%20of%20the%20United%20States.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20stands%20for%20freedom%20and%20democracy%20throughout%20the%20world.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20thirteen%20stripes%20represent%20the%20country%26rsquo%3Bs%20humble%20beginnings%20as%20thirteen%20small%20colonies%20on%20the%20Eastern%20Coast%20of%20a%20vast%20unexplored%20land.%26nbsp%3B%20The%2050%20stars%20stand%20for%20the%20states%20of%20the%20Union%2C%20each%20of%20equal%20value%20to%20the%20country.%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%201893%2C%20English%20professor%20Katharine%20Lee%20Bates%20spent%20the%20summer%20teaching%20at%20Colorado%20College.%26nbsp%3B%20While%20crossing%20the%20country%20on%20the%20train%2C%20she%20experienced%20the%20alabaster%20city%20of%20Chicago%20during%20the%20World%26rsquo%3Bs%20Columbian%20Exposition%20and%20the%20amber%20grain%20fields%20of%20Kansas.%26nbsp%3B%20While%20in%20Colorado%2C%20she%20took%20a%20trip%20up%20Pikes%20Peak%20and%20looked%20over%20the%20Great%20Plains.%26nbsp%3B%20She%20wrote%20a%20poem%2C%20later%20entitled%20%26ldquo%3BAmerica%20the%20Beautiful%2C%26rdquo%3B%20based%20on%20her%20experiences.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20%26ldquo%3BFruited%20Plains%26rdquo%3B%20in%20the%20first%20verse%20represent%20the%20bountiful%20crops%20that%20grow%20in%20the%20Great%20Plains.%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20Flags%20Of%20Our%20Nation%20Series%0A%0AOn%20June%2014%2C%202008%2C%20the%20USPS%20issued%20the%20first%20set%20of%20stamps%20in%20its%20Flags%20of%20Our%20Nation%20Series.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0AThe%20state%20flags%20had%20been%20honored%20on%20US%20stamps%20once%20before%2C%20in%201976%20as%20part%20of%20the%20Bicentennial%20Series%20(US%20%231633-82).%26nbsp%3B%20Those%20stamps%20marked%20an%20important%20first%20%26ndash%3B%20they%20were%20America%26rsquo%3Bs%20first%2050-stamp%20se-tenant.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20sheet%20featured%20all%20of%20the%20state%20flags%20in%20the%20order%20the%20states%20were%20admitted%20to%20the%20Union.%0A%0AIn%202008%2C%20the%20USPS%20again%20decided%20to%20honor%20the%20state%20flags%20but%20in%20a%20different%20format.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20stamps%20represented%20a%20US%20postal%20first.%26nbsp%3B%20They%20have%20the%20beauty%20and%20historic%20significance%20of%20commemorative%20stamps%2C%20but%20were%20issued%20as%20se-tenant%20(face-different%20attached)%20definitive%20coil%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0AThe%20new%20series%20was%20called%20%26ldquo%3BFlags%20of%20Our%20Nation%26rdquo%3B%20and%20would%20consist%20of%2060%20stamps%20total%20%26ndash%3B%2050%20featuring%20state%20flags%2C%20five%20territorial%20flags%2C%20the%20District%20of%20Columbia%20flag%2C%20and%20four%20US%20flags%20flying%20over%20American%20landscapes%20described%20in%20%26ldquo%3BAmerica%20the%20Beautiful.%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20The%20stamps%20in%20the%20new%20set%20would%20be%20issued%20in%20alphabetical%20order%20by%20state%20or%20territory.%26nbsp%3B%20Each%20stamp%20would%20feature%20a%20flag%20and%20a%20%26ldquo%3Bsnapshot%26rdquo%3B%20from%20the%20state%20or%20territory.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20snapshots%20would%20include%20scenic%20areas%2C%20plants%2C%20animals%2C%20and%20more.%0A%0AThe%20first%20set%20of%20stamps%20was%20issued%20on%20Flag%20Day%2C%20June%2014%2C%202008%20at%20the%20National%20Postal%20Museum%20in%20Washington%2C%20DC.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20featured%20the%20flags%20of%20Alabama%20through%20Delaware%2C%20American%20Samoa%2C%20and%20the%20American%20flag%20with%20%26ldquo%3Bspacious%20skies.%26rdquo%3B%0AIn%20speaking%20about%20the%20stamps%2C%20a%20USPS%20representative%20said%2C%20%26ldquo%3BFlags%20are%20our%20nation%26rsquo%3Bs%20greatest%20symbols%20for%20unity%20and%20pride%20and%20the%20values%20we%20hold%20dear.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20Postal%20Service%20is%20proud%20to%20present%20this%20tribute%20as%20we%20honor%20our%20nation%26rsquo%3Bs%20flags.%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20That%20same%20day%2C%20special%20events%20were%20held%20in%20the%20nine%20state%20capitals%20whose%20flags%20were%20featured%20in%20that%20first%20set%20of%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0AThe%20second%20set%20in%20the%20series%20was%20issued%20later%20in%202008%2C%20on%20September%202.%26nbsp%3B%20As%20with%20the%20first%20set%2C%20there%20were%20special%20ceremonies%20in%20the%20state%20capitols%20of%20those%20states%20featured%20on%20this%20set%20of%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20stamps%20in%20this%20set%20featured%20the%20flags%20of%20Florida%20through%20Kansas%2C%20the%20District%20of%20Columbia%20and%20Guam.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0AInitially%2C%20two%20sets%20of%2010%20stamps%20were%20supposed%20to%20be%20issued%20each%20year%20for%20three%20years.%26nbsp%3B%20However%2C%20in%202009%20it%20was%20decided%20that%20each%20year%20would%20only%20include%20the%20issue%20of%20one%20set%20of%2010%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20third%20set%20was%20issued%20on%20August%206%2C%202009%20at%20the%20American%20Philatelic%20Society%20Stamp%20Show%20in%20Pittsburgh%2C%20Pennsylvania.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20stamps%20featured%20the%20flags%20of%20Kentucky%20through%20Missouri%20as%20well%20as%20the%20US%20flag%20with%20%26ldquo%3Bamber%20waves%20of%20grain.%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0AThe%20fourth%20issue%20in%20the%20series%20was%20released%20on%20April%2016%2C%202010%20at%20the%20Mega%20Stamp%20Show%20in%20New%20York%20City.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20stamps%20featured%20the%20flags%20of%20Montana%20through%20North%20Dakota%20with%20the%20US%20flag%20above%20%26ldquo%3Bpurple%20mountain%20majesties.%26rdquo%3B%0A%0A%0AThe%20fifth%20set%20was%20issued%20on%20August%2011%2C%202011%2C%20at%20the%20American%20Philatelic%20Society%20Stamp%20Show%2C%20in%20Columbus%20Ohio.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20were%20the%20first%20in%20the%20series%20to%20be%20issued%20as%20Forever%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%20Featured%20on%20these%20stamps%20were%20the%20flags%20of%20Ohio%20through%20Tennessee%2C%20Puerto%20Rico%2C%20and%20the%20Northern%20Mariana%20Islands.%0A%0A%0AThe%20series%20came%20to%20a%20close%20on%20August%2016%2C%202012%2C%20with%20the%20sixth%20and%20final%20set.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20stamps%20were%20issued%20at%20the%20American%20Philatelic%20Society%20Stamp%20Show%20in%20Sacramento%2C%20California.%26nbsp%3B%20Featured%20on%20these%20stamps%20were%20the%20flags%20of%20Texas%20through%20Wyoming%2C%20the%20Virgin%20Islands%2C%20and%20the%20US%20flag%20with%20%26ldquo%3Bthe%20fruited%20plain.%26rdquo%3B%0A%0A%0AClick%20here%26nbsp%3Bfor%20more%20Flags%20of%20Our%20Nation%20Coin%20Covers%20as%20well%20as%20single%20stamps%20and%20sets.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0AClick%20here%26nbsp%3Bto%20get%20the%20complete%20set%20of%2060%20Flags%20of%20Our%20Nation%20stamps%20in%20one%20convenient%20set.%26nbsp%3B
