The head is made of forged steel & the blade keeps a very sharp edge. Japanese tool frequently look different and this unusual design is based on an axe from the Kofun period in the 3rd Century. It's made for us by blacksmiths in the Niigata prefecture. Those that try them inevitably find them wonderful to use. This is a tough ax with great balance. The 4.5 inch laminated steel blade has a bearded shape, which brings the center of gravity closer to your hand.
