The Design: July 24, 1983 at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are up 4-3 in the top of the 9th and with a man on 1st base and George Brett coming to the plate, the Yankees bring in Goose Gossage to try and close it out. After fouling off the first pitch, Brett turned on a Gossage fastball for a 2-run HR to put the Royals on top. As Brett crossed home plate, Yankees Manager, Billy Martin, was having a conversation with home plate umpire Tim McClelland. Martin argued the pine tar on Brett's bat exceeded the amount allowed by the rules at that time (18). After conferring with the other umpires, McClelland walked towards the Royals dugout and called Brett out, giving the Yankees the win. The rest, as they say, is history. Brett came charging out of the dugout and went off and rightfully so. The Royals protested the game and the protest was upheld by American League President, Lee MacPhail. The game 'resumed' on August 18th (Don Mattingly played 2B and Ron Guidry played CF for NY) and eventually finished as a Royals win, 5-4. The 'Pine Tar Game' is our inspiration for this graphic.
