Sykes-Picot Agreement, secret deal between the Triple Entente in 1916 for the partition of the Ottoman Empire. Though it did not itself determine the modern borders of the Middle East, it laid the groundwork for later agreements which did and has thus left a disreputable legacy among the population of the Middle East.
